Free 'Trolley to Trails' service launches May 2, circling Big Bear Lake all summer

Mountain Transit's new seasonal route drops hikers — and sightseers — at trailheads around the lake every weekend through early October.

Getting to Big Bear Valley's hiking trails just got a lot easier — and cheaper. Mountain Transit is set to launch a new free seasonal route called "Trolley to Trails" beginning May 2, 2026, offering riders a car-free way to reach trailheads scattered around the lake.

The trolley will meander around Big Bear Lake, making stops at hiking trails along the way. The service runs Saturdays, Sundays, and holiday Fridays from May 2 through October 3, 2026, with hours from 8:30 AM to 5:25 PM. Best of all, it's completely free.

The route isn't just for hikers, either. Mountain Transit is welcoming anyone who simply wants to take in the scenery — riders can hop on for the views of the mountains and lake without ever hitting a trail. The new service was made possible through a community partnership with Visit Big Bear.

Riders looking to drive to the trolley can park at the Knickerbocker Public Parking Lot. A spokesperson for Mountain Transit and a representative from Visit Big Bear could not be reached for comment before publication.

The trolley will run every weekend and holiday Friday through October 3. For the most up-to-date schedule and stop information, check Mountain Transit's website or contact the agency directly.
