Extreme heat watch: Big Bear Valley faces dangerous temperatures through Wednesday

NWS San Diego has issued a multi-day watch covering the San Bernardino County Mountains, with highs expected in the 90s.

The National Weather Service in San Diego has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for Big Bear Valley and the broader San Bernardino County Mountains, in effect from Tuesday morning through Thursday, July 16, 2026 at 8:00 PM PDT. Residents should prepare now — conditions are forecast to be dangerous and sustained.

Unlike a typical hot day, this event brings hot and humid conditions with elevated overnight temperatures, meaning the valley won't cool down enough at night for people — or pets — to recover. The NWS forecast notes that mountain areas below 6,000 feet can expect daytime highs in the 90s through the duration of the watch. Note: Big Bear Valley sits at approximately 6,752 feet elevation, above the threshold cited in the NWS forecast; residents should monitor updated NWS forecasts at weather.gov for elevation-specific temperature guidance applicable to the valley floor. The NWS warns that heat-related illnesses increase significantly during events like this one.

Local guidance from the City of Big Bear Lake or San Bernardino County OES on cooling resources and heat relief centers could not be confirmed at press time. Residents are encouraged to check sbcounty.gov or call San Bernardino County's information line for local cooling center locations. Stay hydrated, avoid outdoor exertion during peak afternoon heat, and check on neighbors — especially elderly residents and those without air conditioning.
