$10 million raised to save Moon Camp from luxury development
Friends of Big Bear Valley secured the full purchase price to permanently protect the last undisturbed shoreline on Big Bear Lake — but the property owners and county supervisors who backed the project have not yet responded to requests for comment.

Friends of Big Bear Valley announced July 24 that it has raised the full $10 million needed to purchase Moon Camp, a 63-acre stretch of forested open space and shoreline on Big Bear Lake, blocking a proposed luxury development on the site. The campaign's official fundraising page showed the final total at $10,504,695.72 — surpassing the goal.
The property had been slated for 50 custom homes and a marina. The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors approved that project last September over the objections of more than 5,000 people who sent emails opposing it. Environmental groups, including Friends of Big Bear Valley, have been fighting the development since 2001, filing multiple lawsuits to protect the bald eagles, San Bernardino flying squirrels, and the rare Ash-gray Indian Paintbrush that inhabit the parcel.
The fundraising effort drew support from around the world. More than 25,000 individual donations covered nearly half the $10 million total; the campaign was pushed over the finish line by a single gift of more than $5.5 million from Anna and Greg Brockman.
Moon Camp is considered the last undisturbed shoreline on Big Bear Lake. Experts have warned since the 1980s that developing the parcel would cause significant harm to biological resources, including bald eagles that nest nearby.
The announcement carries an emotional undercurrent for the nonprofit. Sandy Steers, Friends of Big Bear Valley's longtime executive director, died Feb. 11, 2026 — but not before helping negotiate the purchase agreement with the property owners. The organization described saving Moon Camp as her most important priority.
The San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust is expected to complete the purchase by July 31, with any funds beyond the purchase price going toward closing costs, taxes, legal fees, and the long-term stewardship of the land.
