Silverwood Lake reopens for swimming after harmful algae treatment

The lake had been closed to swimmers due to a harmful algae bloom; officials have not yet confirmed what treatment was used or how long the closure lasted.

By Big Bear News1 min read

Silverwood Lake is once again open for swimming after managers treated the reservoir for a harmful algae bloom, according to a report from the Victor Valley Daily Press. The lake, a popular warm-weather destination for Big Bear Valley residents and other regional visitors looking to beat the heat, had been closed to swimmers while the bloom was addressed.

Harmful algae blooms — sometimes called HABs — can produce toxins dangerous to humans and animals, and closures are typically ordered until water quality tests confirm that toxin levels have returned to safe thresholds. Details on the specific treatment method used, how long the closure was in effect, and which agency authorized the all-clear could not be confirmed from available sources.

Swimmers or day-use visitors are encouraged to check the lake's current conditions page or call the park directly before heading out, as bloom conditions can change quickly. Visitors who notice discolored water, foam, or dead fish near the shoreline are advised to keep themselves and their pets out of the water and report observations to park staff.
