By Big Bear News1 min read

A strong thunderstorm was moving toward the Big Bear Valley area Monday afternoon, prompting the National Weather Service in San Diego to issue a Special Weather Statement at 1:48 PM PDT on August 10, 2026.

Doppler radar placed the storm near Highway 18 between Baldwin Lake and Lucerne Valley — roughly 9 miles northeast of Big Bear City — and tracking northwest at 10 mph. NWS warned of wind gusts up to 50 mph and penny-size hail, cautioning that gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects, with minor hail damage to vegetation also possible.

The areas most directly in the storm's path are Eastern Lucerne Valley and Northwestern Johnson Valley. Residents throughout the Big Bear Valley should secure any loose outdoor items and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Big Bear News will update this story if NWS issues a follow-up statement or damage is reported.
