A violent head-on crash between a BMW and a big rig hauling powdered cement left both drivers badly injured Tuesday morning on Highway 18 near Meridian Road in Lucerne Valley. The collision, reported at about 10:45 a.m. on August 25, sent rescue helicopters to airlift both drivers to medical care, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Early CHP dispatches characterized the crash as a fatality, but the agency later walked that back, confirming no deaths had been confirmed. The identities of both drivers had not been released as of the time of reporting, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Highway shutdown

The collision forced CHP to close Highway 18 in both directions — a key route connecting the Big Bear Valley area to the high desert — while investigators worked the scene and crews cleaned up oil spilled during the wreck. By 5:30 p.m., traffic was being allowed through via one lane, though full details on when the road fully cleared were not available.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about it is asked to contact the CHP Victorville Area Office at (760) 241-1186. Big Bear News will update this story as the investigation progresses and driver identities are released.
