Hikers and sightseers planning a trip to the popular summit above Highway 38 should check ahead before heading out.

The Morton Peak Fire Lookout, a beloved summit destination perched above State Highway 38 near Mountain Home Village, is temporarily closed to visitors, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
The lookout is known for sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and canyons. Under normal conditions, the site is staffed by volunteer fire lookouts, and visitors who make the drive up may even be invited into the cab for a closer look. When the lookout is unstaffed or during a fire emergency, visitors must park at the gate and hike in, with no guarantee of cab access. The reason for the current closure and its expected duration could not be confirmed from available information.
Anyone who had planned a trip to Morton Peak should call the Mill Creek Ranger Station at (909) 382-2882 for the latest information before heading out.
