Motocross grand prix returns to Bear Mountain this August for five days of racing

Bear Mountain will trade ski runs for jump lines this summer when the Big Bear MX Grand Prix by O'Neal comes to the resort's lower slopes for five days of motocross racing, August 19–23, 2026.[1]

The event is the product of six years of planning between Big Bear Mountain Resort and Swapmoto Race Series, a Southern California-based promoter that currently produces 23 motocross events per year across Southern California, Illinois, and Alabama — drawing on more than two decades of collective experience.[1]

The course itself will take advantage of what makes Bear Mountain unusual as a motocross venue: its elevation changes, existing ski runs, and fire roads will be incorporated into a layout that includes jumps and berm features.[1] Race classes are open to a wide range of competitors, from riders as young as 5 years old through 60-and-older categories, with divisions for varying skill levels and dedicated pro classes.[1]

Spectators can watch from the Bear Mountain patio deck, where food and beverage service will be available. Sponsor product demos and sales, along with inaugural event merchandise, are also planned for the venue.[1]

A few perspectives worth noting as the event approaches: neighbors near Bear Mountain and residents who may be affected by five days of noise and increased traffic have not yet weighed in publicly, nor has any independent environmental or land-use analysis of using ski runs and fire roads as a motocross course been made available. Local businesses may also have views on the potential economic activity the event could bring to the valley.
