BBMWD board approves yacht club dock replacement, explores after-hours boat inspections

The Big Bear Municipal Water District board wrapped up a busy August 6 meeting in just over an hour, greenlighting a dock rebuild for Eagle Point Estates Yacht Club, nudging a proposed after-hours boat inspection program closer to reality, and approving a memorial bench for a beloved former director.

Yacht club dock gets the go-ahead

The board approved a replacement dock plan for Eagle Point Estates Yacht Club, operating under the facility's existing 2001 perpetual license.[1] The motion was made by Director Peterson and seconded by Director Brewster.[1]

Staff and the board were careful to frame the project as a like-for-like swap: the new dock doesn't shift location or add any uses beyond what the license already allows.[1] Yacht club owners were on hand to answer board questions and confirmed that a seating area within the dock footprint would not involve any new concessions or modifications.

Note: The vote record in the published minutes lists "Bradford" among the AYES — a name that does not appear in the list of board members present. Big Bear News has asked the district to confirm the accurate vote tally.

After-hours banding policy still in the works

Boaters who want to get on the lake in the evenings may eventually have an easier path. The board directed staff to develop a formal policy for after-hours vessel banding — a program that would let boat owners receive aquatic invasive species inspection bands outside normal launch ramp hours.[1]

Under one scenario discussed, a boater could launch, trailer the vessel overnight, and pick up an inspection band first thing the next morning. To keep the invasive species program airtight, the board raised questions about oversight: security cameras, activity logs, and existing access control measures were all floated as potential monitoring tools.[1]

No vote was taken. Staff will bring a fully developed proposal back at a future workshop with the full board present.[1] Notably, no evening boaters or members of the public offered comment on the item — so the board will be shaping the policy largely without direct input from the people who stand to benefit most.

A bench for Director Rehfuss

The board unanimously approved installation of a memorial bench honoring the late former Director Rehfuss, to be placed near the East Ramp picnic table area.[1]

By the numbers — and an experimental fix for algae

General Manager Jared Cheek reported that lake launch counts are running about 13% below last year's pace, though permit usage is slightly ahead.[1] Vice President Ludecke suggested the gap may reflect more boaters staying in dock slips rather than trailering in this season.

On the algae front, Cheek told the board that staff has been exploring ultrasonic technology to curb algae and aquatic vegetation growth on Big Bear Lake.[1] It's early-stage research — the technology has never been deployed on a lake of Big Bear Lake's size — but the district is watching closely.[1]

The board's next regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 20, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the district office, 40524 Lakeview Drive, Big Bear Lake. The public is welcome to attend.
