Big Bear lake district to workshop a plan for after-hours boating access

The Big Bear Municipal Water District will hold a special board meeting on Friday, September 11, 2026 at 11:00 AM at its offices at 40524 Lakeview Drive, Big Bear Lake to workshop a proposal that could let anglers and other boaters stay on Big Bear Lake past the East launch ramps' current closing time — 30 minutes after sunset. Right now, doing so creates a legal problem: Ordinance 51, Section 3-1.105(d) prohibits leaving vehicles or trailers overnight at any District facility, meaning anyone who stays on the water after the ramps close has no compliant way to retrieve their boat and trailer^[1].

A vessel band is a physical tag — similar to wristbands used at events — that identifies a boat as having been approved for after-hours use. The idea has been in the works since midsummer. Committee members first raised the after-hours banding concept at the July 14, 2026 Operations Committee meeting and asked that it be brought to the full board. At the August 6, 2026 board meeting, directors went a step further and requested a dedicated special workshop — the September 11 meeting — to dig into the details^[1].

The General Manager is recommending that the board discuss the after-hours banding process and "provide direction to staff" — meaning no formal vote or policy adoption is expected September 11^[1]. This is a workshop, not a decision point. If the board signals support, staff would return with a more developed proposal.
