"Jackie Strong" shirts sell out as Big Bear community honors beloved bald eagle

Friends of Big Bear Valley's "Jackie Strong" T-shirts — a tribute to the beloved Big Bear bald eagle who died earlier this summer — sold out online almost as soon as they went on sale, the nonprofit announced. The shirts featured three images of Jackie alongside the message "Dedicated to the organizations involved in Jackie's rescue and care," with all proceeds going directly to the groups that fought to save her[1]. Short-sleeved shirts were priced at $25 and long-sleeved versions at $32[1].

Every dollar raised will be split among the San Bernardino County Firefighters Fund, San Dimas Raptor Rescue, and CALM Zoo[1]. Notably, the Ojai Raptor Center — which oversaw Jackie's care in the final weeks of her life — "respectfully requested that they do not receive any donations from the proceeds of the shirt," according to FOBBV[1]. The center's reasons for declining were not explained, and could not be confirmed.

Fans who got their order in before the shirts sold out will need some patience: FOBBV says buyers should allow up to 10 weeks for shipping due to a backlog of current orders[1]. The organization added that given the rapid sell-out, it will consider restocking the shirts[1].

Jackie was rescued on July 18 after she was found grounded near Big Bear Lake following an altercation with two subadult bald eagles[1]. She was estimated to be 14 years old at the time of her death. While the exact cause has not yet been determined, she was suffering from severe anemia, emaciation, and dehydration[1].
