Throughout September, every cookie you buy at Corky's Homestyle Kitchen & Bakery counts toward something bigger than dessert. The regional restaurant chain has launched its 11th annual "Cookies for Cancer" fundraiser, partnering with Loma Linda University Children's Hospital during Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month. This year's campaign aims to raise $56,000 — surpassing the $51,000 the effort brought in last year.

The math is simple: Corky's will donate $1.25 for every Gold Ribbon Cookie sold and 50 cents from every other cookie sold during the month. Over the past decade, the campaign has raised more than $238,000 for the hospital through cookie sales alone.

Beyond the bakery case, Corky's is also running its "Art for Cancer" program, where kids visiting the restaurant can color pictures and write encouraging messages that are delivered directly to young patients at Loma Linda. Owners Mike and Jennifer Towles say the effort has become about more than money. "What started as a way to help raise funds has grown into something much bigger," they said.

The nearest Corky's location to Big Bear Valley is at 19250 Bear Valley Road in Apple Valley. Big Bear News has reached out to Loma Linda University Children's Hospital for comment on how funds are used and what the partnership means to patients and families; a response was not available at the time of publication.

The fundraiser runs through the end of September. For more information or to find additional locations, visit corkyskitchenandbakery.com.
